Arthroscopic Surgery: Advanced Orthopedic Care, Getting Patients Back to Doing the Things They Love.

"I'm driven by a constant thirst for knowledge." -Dr. Robert Geist

A fascination with science - and an insatiable curiosity - is what first led Robert Geist to medical school. Today, those two qualities are still powerful driving forces for Dr. Geist. With over 30 years experience as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Geist takes great pride in his ability to stay on the leading edge of new techniques and technologies.

"Nothing I did when I first started in orthopedic surgery is done the same way now," he says. "I'm continuously updating my technical knowledge. What's more, I'm board certified and re-certified. And I love learning the new techniques that keep me current with the highest standards of orthopedic care."

Dr. Geist's practice focuses on arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine, workman's compensation injuries, and trauma. While he is drawn to the technical aspects of orthopedic surgery, it is the orthopedist's ability to see results quickly that he finds most gratifying. "Although patients need to realize their limitations after surgery, I'm able to get them back to feeling better and doing the activities they enjoy. The ability to positively influence someone's is particularly gratifying."

Dr. Geist originally hails from Indiana but has always been fascinated by New England and its history. After completing his internship at the University of Chicago, and Orthopedic Surgery residency training, he was encouraged to meet Dr. Kalayjian who was looking for a partner in his Connecticut orthopedic practice.

"I was always attracted to the culture and history of New England," says Dr. Geist. "When the opportunity came to form the partnership that eventually became Orthopedic Associates of Middletown, I jumped at it and have been here for 32 years."

Dr. Geist has been Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery since 1986, and, to demonstrate his grasp of current advanced technology and skills, obtained recertification with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1996 and 2006.

He has advanced training in arthroscopic procedures, performs many hip, knee, and shoulder replacements and was recently acknowledged for his expertise with the anterior approach to hip replacement, a procedure that helps patients who are eager to return to their daily activities, have shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

"It's rewarding to be able to continually provide such an excellent range of care for over 30 years." Says Geist, "It's great having patients tell you that you operated on them 25 years ago when they were a teen, and now you're treating them again - or treating their kids." Dr. Geist is also a family man; he and his wife Kim make their home in Haddam. Their children are off on their own, scattered from Minnesota to Virginia. Dr. Geist enjoys golf and archery, and he and his wife enjoy boating, biking, skiing, hiking, and cooking.
