Associates of Middletown

August 28, 2015

Middletown CT - Orthopedic Associates of Middletown, CT, is pleased to announce that Dr. Alfred K. Hicks has joined its staff of skilled physicians and health care professionals.

"OAM is excited to add a new surgeon with unique capabilities who is dedicated to the patient experience. Dr. Hicks will provide surgical and non-surgical intervention in a personable, patient focused environment. His addition to our surgical team will help provide the best care to our patients and community" says Daniel Neal, Practice Administrator.

What is so unique about Dr. Hicks is that he is adept in both orthopedic and neurosurgical approaches treating the cervical, neck and lumbar spine. While having significant expertise in treating a broad range of neurologic and bone-related disorders of the entire length of the spine, Dr. Hicks has a distinct focus in treating neck and cervical spine cases. He specializes in all aspects of non-surgical and surgical care of the adult and pediatric spine. An Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, his scope of surgical practice includes minimally invasive procedures, surgery on the neck, cervical and lumbar spine, (including artificial disc replacement), spinal deformity (including scoliosis), tumors, infection, and traumatic injuries of the spine.

Dr. Hicks received his medical degree from Midwestern University, IL, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Peninsula Hospital, a member of the LIJ Health system on Long Island, NY. He then completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at the renowned Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, KY.

Notes Dr. Hicks, "At Leatherman both neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons are mentors, which allows for a very well-rounded surgical and non-surgical education."

A former military surgeon, Dr. Hicks served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, where he was a staff Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He also served a tour of duty at Bastion Hospital in South Helmand Province, Afghanistan. There, he performed over 450 surgeries on victims of Improvised Explosive Devices, gunshots, and a broad range of other injuries.

Dr. Hicks says he chose OAM for its patient-centered approach to treatment."I like that Orthopedic Associates of Middletown has an exceptional staff working for the benefit of the patients. It is an environment that values doctor-patient relationship. I make sure patients know that I'm hearing their story, and that I understand what they need."

In his leisure time, Dr. Hicks likes being in his woodshop, skiing, and hiking. He and his wife have four children; they enjoy travel and live music together.
